Toilets use more water than any other item in a home: according to the American Water Works Research Foundation, the average toilet's water use in the U.S. is 18.5 gallons per person per day. With climate change, population explosion, major urbanization, the conventional method of removing human waste is simply not sustainable.

At the general assembly of the World Toilet Association held in Seoul on November 25, 2007, the one message that came across was that conventional flush toilets are not only environment unfriendly but are also a serious public health hazard. All agreed that new ways had to be developed to dispose human excreta. If flush toilets have to be used, they must be redesigned to reduce water consumption, or use recycled water.
