Nobody really knows who first had the honour and privilege of sitting on the throne, but bucket loads of evidence suggest that ancient cultures were surprisingly proficient in moving their sewage in a way that kept people from stepping in streams of their own faecal matter. Fast-forward a few thousand years and we have put a man in space - more importantly he has pooped there; we’re building toilets from ultra light and brittle carbon fibre; and we’re ‘tweeting’ our poop. Toilets have changed the world we live in and we look at their rather unglamourous history, the impact they’ve had on society, and finally what our bums can expect in the future.
